  3. How do I set up PHP Text Hit Counter
Installing the text hit counter is very easy.

    (1) Unzip the distribution file to your local PC

    (2) Open the config.php file and edit the settings:

    (3) Create a directory on your web server called "count" e.g. "http://www.yoursite.com/count"

    (4) Chmod the new directory "count" to 777

    (5) Upload counter.php, codelock.php and config.php to "http://yoursite.com/count"

    (6) Insert an include statement in the pages where you want the counter to show.

Full instructions are included with the scripts readme file.

  4. I get error messages when I use the script
If you receive errors like this:

Warning: fopen(counter.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to create stream: Permission denied in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/counter.php on line 32

Warning: fputs(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/counter.php on line 33

Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/counter.php on line 35

then the script is unable to write the counter.txt file it needs to track the hits.
It's likely that you have chmodded your count directory to 755. Try chmodding to 777.

If you still get error messages create a blank text file using notepad and call it counter.txt. Upload it to your count direcory.

The directory "count" MUST exist in the root of your web server. Changing the name of the directory will prevent the script from working or nesting the directory in another sub directory will have the same effect.

  5. I get an open_basedir restriction in effect error message
If you receive this error message (or something similar that talks about open_basedir restrictions in effect):

Warning: main() [function.main]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/usr/lib/php4/php/language/lang-.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (/home/http/vhost/yourdomain.com/httpdocs)

Then your hosts have set some restrictions on your server. Most hosts will be happy to turn off this restriction to allow the script to run. Contact your hosts, inform them of the error message you are receiving and request that they remove open basedir restrictions.

  6. I can't get the script to work on my HTML pages
This script only works on php pages. It is entirely possible that you can change the extension of your page from html to php by simply renaming the file so the script works. E.g. Say your index page is called index.html and you have included the script on that page. Just rename the file index.php and both your page and the script should work. If there are any problems you can just rename the page back to html again

  7. How can I remove the link to Liquid Frog from the script
This is a free script, as such it generates no income for us. In addition, we have to bear the costs associated with download of the script in terms of bandwidth and ongoing development and all our free scripts are very popular with our site visitors meaning a lot of bandwidth! We use the link included with the script to generate traffic to this site in the hope that people will purchase one of our paid for scripts or some of our software. Whilst we would love to give away our scripts and not have a link, economic realities dictate otherwise. We give you the script for free - you return that by sending us traffic, we consider this a fair exchange. If the link spoils the look of your site or you really don't want the link, you can pay a small fee to have it removed. We charge just $7.99 for removal of the link and you can find instructions on how to do this in the Readme.htm file that comes with the script.
