ANSWERS
Avanti Web Stats
  1. What is Avanti Web Stats
Avanti Web Stats is a mixture of web server scripts and Windows software.

Designed to collect statistics from as many of your websites as you care to monitor, it will display all your stats on your desktop. It achieves this through the use of a small Windows application which collates the statistics and presents them in an easy to read format via a text or chart view. This allows you to monitor all your traffic from all your sites at the same time making it a quick and easy process to monitor all your web sites traffic levels.

It is capable of monitoring search engine traffic and reporting which search terms were used to find your site. It will also show you which search engines are spidering your site(s). You can set Avanti to monitor a single page or every page on your site. This allows you to track visitors from the moment they enter your site until the moment they leave it. Avanti will also show you how your visitors arrived on your site by reporting the URL they came from as well as a wealth of information about each visitor such as the browser they use, the color depth and screen resolution, their IP address and ISP as well as many other details.

Included with Avanti Web Stats is also a site availability checker. This monitors all your websites and will warn you by changing its' desktop icon, popping up a dialogue box and/or emailing you (and/or others) should one or more of your sites be unreachable by your visitors. You can configure Avanti to do all this automatically and it will constantly monitor your sites making sure you don't lose any valuable traffic.

This is just a brief glimpse of what Avanti can do. Download the free evaluation version and see for yourself. Avanti is easy to set up but incredibly powerful. It's what webmasters have always wanted but never had - until now!

  32. How do I set up Avanti Web Stats

Installation of Avanti Web Stats is a two part process. First set up your server(s), then setup your desktop client.

    Server install:

  33. Extract the downloaded distribution zip file to a folder on your local PC
  34. Ftp to your web server and create a directory to hold the Avanti scripts - you can call it what you like
  35. Chmod the directory you've just created to 777
  36. Upload all the Avanti script files to the newly created directory
  37. Browse to http://www.yoursite.com/avanti_directory_you_created.index.php
  38. The installer will fill in all the fields for you
  39. Set the maximum size of log file you want to use. If you're unsure just leave the default value of 512KB.
  40. Enter a password to use to protect your stats
  41. The install script will create the files needed and present you with some code to paste into your page
  42. Select the tracking code for your page type (PHP or html) and copy it to your clipboard
  43. Find your index page (or the page you wish to track from) and paste the tracking code somewhere after the <body> tag but before the </body> tag for html pages or after the last PHP close tag (?>) for a PHP page. See the install script for more details
  44. Save the modified page back to your web server
  45. Check the directory that Avanti has been installed into and make sure a file called config.php and a file called script.js have been created
  46. View the modified page in your web browser and check for any error messages
  47. Proceed on to set up the Avanti desktop Client
  48. Local PC install:

  49. Browse to the Avanti folder on your PC where you extracted the distribution file
  50. Close any running programs including any virus checkers or firewalls
  51. Double click the Setup icon and follow the on screen prompts
  52. If you disabled your virus checker or firewall, re-enable them
  53. Add the sites you want to monitor and collect stats for
  54. Avanti is now ready to run.

  55. [Back to top]
  56. What is the difference between the evaluation version and the standard version
The evaluation version is designed to allow you to try Avanti Web Stats for free so you can make sure that it will work on your server, your sites and your local PC and that it will meet your requirements.

There is no difference in the core functionality between the evaluation version and the standard version except that the evaluation version will only monitor the last 750 visitors to your site.

  57. What do the status icons mean
Avanti will monitor the status of all your sites for availability. Next to the name of your site in the 'Sites List' view, Avanti will show you the current status of your site by showing one of the icons listed below.

Please note this does not affect your stats unless your site is unreachable in which case stats will probably not be recorded until you resolve the current unavailability problem and bring your site back on line

    - Please wait... Avanti is checking your site for availability. It may take a moment or two for Avanti to determine the status of your site. Stats are working.

    - Your site has been found, is being monitored and is operational. This is a 'Normal' status. Stats are working.

    - Avanti was unable to contact your site. Your site cannot be found, is unreachable or is down. You need to check your site! Stats are probably not working.

    - Site checking is currently disabled. Your site is not being monitored and Avanti will not be able to determine the status of your site. Stats are working.

  58. How many licenses do I need to monitor multiple sites
You can monitor any number of web sites with just a single license. If you wish to monitor sites from multiple PC's, you will need a license for each PC Avanti is installed on.

For example if you are monitoring 25 web sites and you are doing that from just a single PC, you only require one license. If you are monitoring 1 web site but you do it from three different PC's, you will need three licenses. This applies even if you are not using all three PC's at the same time. Essentially the license you are purchasing is a license to install and use on a single PC.

  59. What is the current stable released version of Avanti
The current stable released version is V1.0.1
    [Back to top]
  60. Where can I find my version of Avanti
On the Avanti desktop client, click help/about. The version is shown in the popup window.
  61. Can I suggest a way to improve Avanti Web Stats
Yes of course. We actively encourage users of our software and scripts to suggest improvements so that they can be developed still further. To make a suggestion please use the contact form on the site and send your comments to feedback.
  62. I get an Unhandled Exception error
Please see the Known Issues FAQ dated August 14th 2004. You are recommended to upgrade your Avanti install to the latest version.
  63. I get error messages when running the Avanti Web Stats installer on my web server
If you are receiving errors like this:

Warning: fopen(script.js) [function.fopen]: failed to create stream: Permission denied in /home/httpd/vhost/your_domain.com/httpdocs/stats/index.php on line 131
Warning: fputs(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhost/your_domain.com/httpdocs/stats/index.php on line 139
Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/your_domain.com/httpdocs/stats/index.php on line 141
Warning: chmod() [function.chmod]: Operation not permitted in /home/httpd/vhosts/your_domain.com/httpdocs/stats/index.php on line 143

Then your web server probably has some restrictions set. You will need to check that two files (config.php and script.js) have been created.

To do this start your FTP browser and connect to your site. Check the Avanti stats directory for these two files. If they are present on the server, open each one in turn. The config.php file should look like this:

    # The stats directory on the server
    define( "_STATS_DIR", "/home/httpd/vhosts/your_domain.com/httpdocs/Avanti_stats_dir/" );
    # The URL where the stats script can be found
    define( "_STATS_URL", "http://your_domain.com/" );
    # The maximum log size. If the log exceeds this size, it is flushed after it is accessed.
    define( "_MAX_LOG_SIZE", "128" );
    # The encrypted digest of the password used to retrieve the stats.
    defined( "_STATS_PASS", "0986geewdshs563cswd373ce4e326y754f6" );
    ?>

And the script.js file should look like this:

    dr=this.document.referrer;
    s=screen;
    sw=s.width;
    sh=s.height;
    sd=s.colorDepth;
    document.write("");

Check the path variables carefully to make sure they are correct. If they are not you will need to modify them by hand. If you have difficulty finding the path to use for _STATS_DIR then refer to the readme file in the Find Stats Dir folder contained in the downloaded distribution file. See also the readme file in the Config and script files folder in the downloaded distribution file.

  64. I get an application error when I run Avanti
If you are receiving any sort of application error when you try and run Avanti then it is likely that you do not have the .NET Framework installed on your PC or it is corrupted in some way.

.NET is a free download available via Windows Update or directly from the Microsoft web site [here]

  65. Avanti reports no records to download after I've installed it
If, after installing Avanti, the desktop client reports "No new records were found on the site" it is probably because your tracking code is not in the right place on your page. Another symptom is that only a blank page is shown when you try and view your stats directly from the site.

In this case check for the presence of two files in your stats directory on your server - config.php and script.js. If these two files are present then the install routine has been successful and the problem is only related to placement of the tracking code.

To resolve this issue make sure that you are using the correct tracking code for your type of page and that it is in the correct place. If you have tried adding the tracking code to the bottom of your page, delete it and move it to the very top. To generate the tracking code again, simply browse to your stats directory in your web browser.

You will know when the tracking code placement is correct because a file called log.csv will be created in your stats directory after the first hit.

Don't forget that in a new install of Avanti there may not be any hits to track because no one has visited your site yet!

  66. I had to restore my PC and now Avanti doesn't work
It has been noted that when a user restores a PC to an earlier date under XP, sometimes Avanti will refuse to run giving a Fatal Execution Engine Error.

It would seem that the restore process sometimes corrupts XP's .Net installation. In order to rectify the problem, simply download .Net from the Microsoft website and re-install it. There is no need to re-install Avanti.

You can obtain .Net from [here]

  67. I get an open_basedir restriction in effect error message
If you receive this error message (or something similar that talks about open_basedir restrictions in effect):

Warning: main() [function.main]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/usr/lib/php4/php/language/lang-.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (/home/http/vhost/yourdomain.com/httpdocs)

Then your hosts have set some restrictions on your server. Most hosts will be happy to turn off this restriction to allow the script to run. Contact your hosts, inform them of the error message you are receiving and request that they remove open basedir restrictions.

  68. Known Issues & History
August 14th 2004 - Avanti V1.0.1 Critical update released. This release supercedes any previous release and users of Avanti before this version should upgrade. All known issues prior to this upgrade have been fixed in this version. There are now no known issues with Avanti.

August 14th 2004 - The Avanti interface is undergoing some minor reworking as part of the issues reported below. All bug reports and errors to date will be fixed and Avanti will be re-released with a version update to V1.0.1. This is a minor update but is considered critical. All users will be recommended to upgrade their Avanti installations. Full instructions will be provided with the distribution file.

August 14th 2004 - We are aware of an issue with some users experiencing an Unhandled Exception error when their log files exceed 7,000 records. Whilst this is only an issue for a very small number of users, we are currently working on a resolution. A fix will be released within a week.

August 14th 2004 - We are aware of an issue with incorrect instructions in the help file for the hit counter. The help file is being re-written.

August 13th 2004 - We are aware of an issue with the hit counter. It is not possible to hide the counter from site visitors. An update is being written and will be available in the next few days.

Chatter Box
  1. What is Chatter Box
Chatter Box is a free chat script that will allow visitors to your site to chat to each other. It has many inbuilt features such as smilies, bad word filter, getsures and banners.

It is very easy to setup and comes with its' own installer. The admin panel will allow you to add, delete and view banners, kick or ban users and enter chat as Admin.

It is a fully featured script.

  2. How do I set up Chatter Box
Set up is simple and straightforward.

Create a directory on your server to receive the script.

Upload all the files and folders to your webserver. Keep the directory structure intact.

Chmod the chat directory you created to 777.

Chmod the banners directory to 777.

Chmod the file lk.php to 777.

Edit the file db_file.php and add your database settings.

    Browse to http://www.yoursite.com/chat_directory/install.php.

Follow the instructions given in the installer.

    That's all.

  3. Why are there so many things to change in config.php
This script has a particularly large number of variables that can be modified. We have done this purposely so that the final configuration of your script can be a very close match to your site.

If you don't want to spend time going through all these variables and changing them - don't. The script will work perfectly with the standard configuration and the only two changes you need to make are to your paths.

  5. Some of my visitors can't login to chat
If your visitors are unable to log in it is probably because they have a popup blocker in use. Ask them to turn this off or set their blocker to "allow" the chat window to open.
  6. Can I suggest a way to improve Chatter Box
Yes of course. We actively encourage users of our software and scripts to suggest improvements so that they can be developed still further. To make a suggestion please use the contact form on the site and send your comments to feedback.
  7. How can I remove the link to Liquid Frog from the script
This is a free script, as such it generates no income for us. In addition, we have to bear the costs associated with download of the script in terms of bandwidth and ongoing development and all our free scripts are very popular with our site visitors meaning a lot of bandwidth!

We use the link included with the script to generate traffic to this site in the hope that people will purchase one of our paid for scripts or some of our software. Whilst we would love to give away our scripts and not have a link, economic realities dictate otherwise. We give you the script for free - you return that by sending us traffic, we consider this a fair exchange.

If the link spoils the look of your site or you really don't want the link, you can pay a small fee to have it removed. We charge just $7.99 for removal of the link and you can find instructions on how to do this in the help file from the admin panel.

Date and Time
  1. What is Date and Time
Date and Time is a very simple script that will show the current date and time on your web page. Written in PHP it is a very small file that is incredibly easy to setup and use.
  2. What are the requirements for Date and Time
Date and Time only requires that PHP is installed on your web server and you are able to chmod directories.
  3. How do I set up Date and Time
Installing the Date and Time script is straightforward.

    (1) Unzip the distribution file to your local PC.

    (2) Create a directory on your web server root and call it dateandtime.

    (2) Upload codelock.php config.php and dateandtime.php to the dateandtime directory you just created.

    (3) Chmod the dateandtime directory to 777.

    (4) Edit the config.php file to suit your needs using notepad or something similar and save the file back to the server (a full explanation of the variables is given in the file).

    (5) Include dateandtime.php in the page where you want it to appear. To do this use the lines below:

    <?php
    include('http://www.yoursite.com/dateandtime/dateandtime.php');
    ?>

  4. What is the server offset variable for
The server offset variable is used to calculate the difference between your own local time and the time set on the server. This allows the script to show the local time rather than the server time.

If you want, you can set this variable to reflect any time in the world by simply working out the difference in minutes between your server time and the time you want to display.

  5. My server time is ahead of my local time. How do I set up the offset variable to take this into account
The server offset variable will take the server time and add any minutes you set. If your server time is behind your local time, then it is a simple matter of working out the difference in minutes between your server time and your local time. For example, if your server time is 1300 and you local time is 1400, you need only set your offset variable to 60. The script will then add that value to the server time before it displays the time on your page. The output from the script will be 'servertime + offset = local time' and therefore the script will display 1400.

If your server time is ahead of your local time then clearly adding an offset to the server time is not going to work unless you work 24 hours ahead. By this we mean that if your server time is 1500 and your local time is 1400 then you must add 23 hours (1380 minutes) as the offset value. The script will then display servertime(1500) + offset in minutes (1380 or 23 hours) = localtime (1400). The script does not care about the date because this is worked out separately. Consequently the script will still show the correct date and now it will also show the correct time.

Frog Tag
  1. What is Frog Tag
Frog Tag is a free Tag Board or Shout Box (depending on what you like to call it). It's very simple to set up and very easy to use requiring no database but running instead on a flat file.
  2. What are the requirements for Frog Tag
Frog Tag only requires that PHP is installed on your web server and safe mode turned off (or a suitable work around put in place by your hosts).
  3. How do I set up Frog Tag
Installing this Tag Board script is very easy.

    (1) Unzip the distribution file to your local PC

    (2) Using Notepad or something similar, find the file called config.php and edit the file to best suit your needs. You will find the file fully commented but you don't need to change anything unless you want to, it will work in the default configuration. Once done, save the file.

    (3) Create a directory called "shout" in your server root and upload the files to your web server.

    (4) Chmod the directory "shout" to 777.

    (5) Chmod the file shout.txt to 777.

    (6) Include the file on the page where you want the tag board to appear:

For PHP pages use an include statement

For HTML pages use an Iframe which will make the Tag Board appear in it's own small window (full instructions in the readme file for both HTML and PHP pages).

    (7) If you want to change the colors and layout, make the necessary changes in style.css.

  4. How do I delete the shouts and start again with an empty shout box
There are two ways to achieve this. Either ftp to your server and upload the file shouts.txt from the distribution zip overwriting the existing one (don't forget to check permissions on the file are set to 777), or edit the file shouts.txt on your server and delete the shouts that way.
  5. I get a page not found error message when I type a shout
This is probably because safe mode is enabled on your web server. In order for this script to work correctly you will need to contact your hosts and request that safe mode is turned off.

Some hosts will be happy to set up the server in such a way that safe mode is turned off but the protection it provided is still in place whereas others may not. You won't know until you ask them. A good quality host is always able to turn safe mode off yet still provide the protection safe mode provides.

If you get any sort of error message and you have followed the install instructions closely, this is the most likely culprit. The script will not work until safe mode is off or a workaround found by your hosts.

Your server configuration could also cause this problem. Again, you will need to contact your hosts and make them aware of the problem so they can reconfigure the server so the script works.

  6. I get error messages when I use the script
If you receive these, or similar error messages:

Warning: fopen(shout.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to create stream: No such file or directory in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/shout/shout.php on line 26

Warning: fread(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/shout/shout.php on line 27

Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/shout/shout.php on line 29

then the shout directory permissions or the shout.txt file permissions, or both are likely to be 755 rather than 777. Chmod the shout directory to 777, chmod the shout.txt file to 777.

If the problem persists, create a blank file called shout.txt using notepad. Connect to your web server via FTP, delete the file shout.txt from your web server and upload the file you just created in it's place. Chmod it to 777.

  7. I get a 403 Forbidden. You don't have permission to access to this document on this server error
This is probably because safe mode is enabled on your web server. In order for this script to work correctly you will need to contact your hosts and request that safe mode is turned off.

Some hosts will be happy to set up the server in such a way that safe mode is turned off but the protection it provided is still in place whereas others may not. [Back to top]
  9. I get an Error - Bad Gateway
If you recieve any sort of Bad Gateway error then your server configuration is probably the cause. You will need to contact your hosts and make them aware of the problem so they can reconfigure the server so the script works.

  11. My anti virus program sometimes reports a Trojan or virus in my download
It has been noted that some anti virus programs (particularly Sophos) will falsely report the presence of a Trojan or virus in a downloaded script file - usually the Psyme-R trojan.

As a result of locking our scripts, quite often the anti virus program is unable to 'look' inside the zip file and will only see a proportion of what is there. In this scenario it is possible that an anti virus program will report a 'false positive'.

Please be assured that any files downloaded from this site do not contain any viruses or trojans. All downloads are checked frequently and are certified virus free. You can cross check a downloaded script file by downloading one of the many free anti virus programs available such as AVG, Free AV or PC-cillin etc.

To be sure that your PC is not infected with a virus or trojan, we recommend that you update your anti virus software regularly and perform regular scans of your system.

  12. Internet Explorer is blocking access to the script help file
If you are running Internet Explorer 6 with XP service pack 2 installed it may prevent access to the help file for a script.

This is because our help files are sometimes encoded to prevent the value of the link removal buy now button being changed. Internet Explorer may display the following error message 'To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options...'.

If you see this error message you may safely allow Internet Explorer to open the file. We guarantee that there is no active content included within the file except for normal outbound links back to the Liquid Frog website. No information is collected from your PC at any time for any reason.

  13. How do I chmod a file or folder
Chmodding describes the process of changing the access permissions on either a file or folder on your webserver.

Generally carried out to allow a script to write data in/to that file or folder, it is quite often necessary to change access permissions to allow a script to work.

Ordinarily this will be done via your FTP client. Connect to your site in the normal way and display the files and directories. Select the file or directory who's permissions you need to change.

From here on it depends which FTP client you use as to how you will modify (or chmod) the permissions. It's fairly safe to say that most FTP clients will allow you to right click and select a menu option.

You will be looking for something like 'Permissions', 'Actions', 'FTP Commands' or something similar. Selecting this menu option should then present you with the current settings for that file or directory. Take a good look at the option screen. Does it show a series of numbers like 755 or 644? If so, simply type in the number you require to change the permissions. For example, if you wanted to chmod a folder to 777 and its' current setting was 755, just overtype the 755 with 777 and click on 'Save', 'Ok' or whatever button you have.

Some FTP clients will want you to enter or remove ticks from boxes to set permissions. Usually it will show you the current permissions and, as you add or remove ticks, the permissions status will change to reflect the permissions you are currently setting.

You are probably going to want to chmod to 777 most often and this is very easy. Where you have tick boxes, just tick them all. For your reference: What you are actually changing is who can have what type of access to the file or folder and it is set by Owner, Group or All users with each having three options. Read, Write and Execute. It is the combination of those selected that gives the numerical value. You probably don't need to know what each is providing your site hosts have secured your server correctly and it is usually only necessary to know what you need to change it to.

Graphic Hit Counter
  1. What is PHP Graphical Hit Counter
PHP Graphical Hit Counter is a small script written in PHP that will count the number of hits to your website. It will provide the number of hits in the form of small images.
  2. What are the requirements for PHP Graphical Hit Counter
PHP Graphical Hit Counter requires PHP to be installed on your server. That's all.
  3. How do I set up PHP Graphical Hit Counter
Installing the graphical hit counter is very easy.

    (1) Unzip the distribution file to your local PC

    (2) Using Notepad or something similar, find the file called config.php and edit the file to best suit your needs. Once done, save the file.

    (3) Upload the directories and files to your web server making sure the directory structure remains intact.

    (4) Chmod the directory "count" to 777.

    (5) Include the file on the page where you want the counter to appear.

Full instructions are included with the scripts readme file.

  4. The counter doesn't count on my HTML pages
This script only works on php pages. It is entirely possible that you can change the extension of your page from html to php by simply renaming the file so the script works. E.g. Say your index page is called index.html and you have included the script on that page. Just rename the file index.php and both your page and the script should work. If there are any problems you can just rename the page back to html again
    [Back to top]
  5. I get error messages when I use the script
The first time you run this script you will probably get the errors (or similar) below:

Warning: fopen(count.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to create stream: No such file or directory in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/LFgraphiccounter.php on line 26

Warning: fread(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/LFgraphiccounter.php on line 27

Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/LFgraphiccounter.php on line 29

This is normal and is because the script needs to create a file called count.txt before it will begin counting. This error should disappear when you refresh the page and the script will work normally.

If this doesn't work and the script is unable to create the count.txt file, simply create your own blank count.txt file in notepad and upload it to http://www.yoursite.com/count.

  7. The counter doesn't increment
If the counter doesn't increment then you have set your count directory permissions to 755. You must chmod it to 777 instead.

  8. How do I use my own graphics
If you wish to use different graphics this is easy to achieve. Either copy the .gif files you want to use to the images/default directory or rename the directory your .gif files are in to default.

We charge just $7.99 for removal of the link and you can find instructions on how to do this in the Readme.htm file that comes with the script.

  10. Can I suggest a way to improve this script
Yes of course. We actively encourage users of our software and scripts to suggest improvements so that they can be developed still further. To make a suggestion please use the contact form on the site and send your comments to feedback.

Internet Monitor
  1. What is Internet Traffic Monitor
Internet Traffic Monitor extracts stats from the Internet Traffic Report website and displays them in your browser. It will tell your visitors the current state of the internet as a whole in terms of traffic levels and performance. It is a good indicator of the general condition of the internet and gives your visitors a valid reason to return to your site on a regular basis.
  2. What are the requirements for Internet Traffic Monitor
All you need to run ITM is PHP installed on your web server.
  3. How do I set up Internet Traffic Monitor
Setting up ITM is a very simple process indeed. Essentially, edit the config.php file to suit the look of your site, upload the files to your web server and chmod one directory. That's all.
  4. Why does this script sometimes not display anything
Once in a while you may notice the the script shows broken images (a small red x instead of the stats). The script relies on the statistics provided by the internet traffic report website. As with all websites there may be the odd occassion when the site is unavailable and therefore the script will be unable to extract the required data.

Just try again later and the script will function normally once the internet traffic report web site is back up.

Kiss Gallery
  1. What is Kiss Gallery
Kiss Gallery is a very simple gallery script that allows you to display your pictures on your website.

Very easy to setup, it requires no database. Adding or removing pictures is very simple and only requires that you upload or delete them from your photos directory.

  2. What are the requirements to run Kiss Gallery
Kiss Gallery only needs a PHP enabled server with either GD1, GD2 or Imagemagick installed and configured correctly.
  3. How do I set up Kiss Gallery
Before using the gallery on your website, it is necessary to set up the file called kiss_gallery_config.php. In here are all the settings you will need to set the gallery to match your requirements. Each variable has a comment with it that tells you what to change and what it will affect

Edit the file using notepad or something similar. Once you have finished editing the file, upload it to your server and observe the effects. If you are unsure about any of the variables, simply change them and see what happens.

We understand that some people can have difficulty with variables that include paths such as the path to Imagemagick for instance. The gallery script has been set up as default to use GD2 to generate the thumbnails etc and the default settings will probably work for you.

If you need to change the default GD2 to Imagemagick, you will need to know the path to both the convert and identify scripts on your server. Again, we have set up the defaults with common settings. If the defaults don't work for you, your hosts can provide you with the path information you require.

  4. How do I add or remove pictures in the gallery
Simply upload or delete them from the photos directory on your server
    [Back to top]
  5. Why can't I edit or sort the pictures in the gallery
This is the initial release of the gallery script and we have created it to work out if there is any need or interest in this type of script. If there is sufficient interest we will be adding various features to it as it develops.

The next version of the script is expected to have an admin panel that will give you the ability to edit, sort, remove and add pictures directly from your browser.

  6. I want to put my pictures into their own albums
Kiss does not support multiple albums. It is a very simple gallery script (Kiss - keep it simple) that just allows you a quick way of getting your pictures onto your site in a nice layout.

Later versions may well have the ability to add multiple albums and more.

  7. I get various error messages that the script can't find items
Did you upload the script into a sub directory on your server? If so, it will not be able to find the directories it needs to function. The files kiss_gallery.php, kiss_gallery_config.php, kiss_gal_lk.php and kiss_gallery_style.css need to be in the ROOT of your server NOT in any sub directory.

  9. I get a could not create thumbnail directory error
This is probably because you have not set the correct permissions on the photos directory. Set the permissions to 777 and the script will then be able to create the thumbnail directory.
  10. My thumbnails are not showing
If your thumbnails are not being generated but you just see a link instead, then the image script on your server (GD or Imagemagick) is probably not set up correctly.

Contact your hosts and make them aware of the problem. A workaround that is usually successful is to convert all your images to JPG.

  11. Can I suggest a way to improve Kiss Gallery
Yes of course. We actively encourage users of our software and scripts to suggest improvements so that they can be developed still further. To make a suggestion please use the contact form on the site and send your comments to feedback.

News Ticker
  1. What is News Ticker
This News Ticker script Allows you to display your news in a scrolling box. It is probably the most configurable news ticker script available on the net today. It can be changed in many ways from a simple single line news ticker with no border all the way up to a large box that can show many lines at the same time. Naturally the text will pause its' scrolling effect when your place your mouse on it.

It is also very easy to make it show clickable links, images or anything else you want. Providing you can code it in HTML you can scroll it as part of your news ticker. You can also change the font size and color as well as the complete layout and everything is controlled via a simple configuration file. You can even have multiple instances of the same script running on the same page so you can have it show a single line news ticker in one place and a left hand box in another.

  2. What are the requirements for News Ticker
News Ticker only requires that you have a PHP enabled web server.
  3. How do I set up News Ticker
Installing the news ticker is straightforward.

    (1) Unzip the distribution file to your local PC.

    (2) Create a directory on your web server and call it anything you like.

    (3) Upload codelock.php config.php and ticker.php to the directory you just created.

    (4) Chmod the directory to 777.

    (5) Edit the config.php file to suit your needs using notepad or something similar and save the file back to the server (a full explanation of the variables is given below).

    (6) Include ticker.php in the page where you want it to appear. To do this use the lines below:

    < ?php
    include('http://www.yoursite.com/directoryname/ticker.php');
    ?>

    (7) That's all.

  5. I get error messages when I use the script
If the error messages you get look something like this:

Warning: main(../ticker/ticker.php) [function.main]: failed to create stream: Operation not permitted
    in /home/httpd/vhosts/yourhost.com/httpdocs/index.php on line 23

Warning: main() [function.main]: Failed opening '../ticker/ticker.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/php4/php')
    in /home/httpd/vhosts/yourhost.com/httpdocs/index.php on line 23

    Then the answer is to change the include path on your pages from "include('../your_ticker_directory/ticker.php');" to "include('http://www.yoursite.com/your_ticker_directory/ticker.php');

  6. I get a parse error when I try to add a hyperlink
This is because the quotes have been changed in the config.php file for the $news variable.

Download the config.php file from your server and open it with notepad. Look at the $news variable line. Does it start with news$ = 'something or $news ="something?

If it starts with a single quote, change the first and last quotes to a double quote so it looks like this:

    $news = "<a href='http://somewhere.com' target='_new'>Link Text Here</a> This is where the news will appear";

Notice how the quotes have been changed to double quotes at the start and end of the line but also notice that the quotes inside the double quotes that define the link are single quotes!

It is already commented in the admin panel but, if you are using the admin panel in the version of the script that has the link removed, you cannot add links using the admin panel. You need to edit the config.php file as described above.

Random Links
  1. What is Random Links
Random Links is a small script that will display a random link selected from a text file every time a visitors browser is refreshed. With no database, it is extremely easy to set-up and use and you can have it working in just a few minutes.

It is highly configurable meaning that you can easily change its' appearance to match your site. You can add a heading above the links. Included with the script are full instructions on setting it up and using it.

  2. What are the requirements for Random Links
Random Links requires only that PHP is enabled on your server and that you are able to change directory permsissions.
  3. How do I set up Random Links
Installing this random links script is very easy.

    (1) Unzip the distribution file to your local PC - note the directory structure, you will need to re-create this on your server later.

    (2) Using Notepad or something similar, find the file called config.php and edit the file to best suit your needs. Once done, save the file (see notes below on removing the link to Liquid Frog or using an administration panel instead of manually editing the config.php file).

      (3) Upload the randomlinks directory and files inside to the root of your web server making sure the directory structure remains intact.

    (4) Chmod the randomlinks directory to 777.

    (5) Include the file on the page where you want the random links to appear by using the lines:

    <?php
    include('http://www.yoursite.com/randomlinks/randomlinks.php');
    ?>

  5. I get a Not found error message
If you get a "Not Found The requested URL was not found on this server" message or something similar then you have probably misnamed the directory the script needs to live in. Check that you have named the directory "randomlinks"
  6. I keep getting error messages
Regardless of the error message you are getting (except those already covered in these FAQ's) it is entirely possible that these messages are being generated because you have not set the permissions correctly on the showserverinfo directory.

FTP to your site and check that you have set the showserverinfo directory to 777.

  7. I'm not comfortable with setting permisisons to 777
If you really don't want to set permisisons on the randomlinks directory to 777 because you are concerned about the security of your server, you can try setting them to 755 instead to see if that works.

Whether this will work depends entirley on how your server has been set up. A server that has been correctly set up should allow you to set permissions to 755 with no problems and still let the script run.

We charge just $7.99 for removal of the link and you can find instructions on how to do this in the Readme.htm file that comes with the script.

  9. Can I suggest a way to improve this script
Yes of course. We actively encourage users of our software and scripts to suggest improvements so that they can be developed still further. To make a suggestion please use the contact form on the site and send your comments to feedback.

Random Quotes
  1. What is Random Quotes
Random Quotes is a free script that will show a quote taken from a text file on your server each time the visitors browser is refreshed. It's very simple to set up and very easy to use requiring no database but running instead on a flat file.

We have tried to create a random quote script that does not fall into the trap of many other scripts like it. We were aware that most random quote scripts seem to show some quotes more than others and we have written this script to be as random as possible.

The other problem with most quote scripts is that they usually have a limited number of quotes included with them. This means you have to search the net and spend ages copying and pasting the quotes you want into the script. Whilst you are able to do this with our script, we have also included a large number and wide range of quotes so you are ready to go as soon as the script is installed. With 360 quotes included there is little chance that a casual visitor to your site will see the same quote twice.

We have also made a quote add on pack available for download. With this pack installed you have 590 quotes in your script and you can still add more if you wish.

  2. How do I set up Random Quotes
Installing the Random Quotes script is straightforward.

    (1) Unzip the distribution file to your local PC.

    (2) Create a directory on your web server root and call it randomquotes.

    (2) Upload codelock.php config.php, thequotes.txt and randomquotes.php to the randomquotes directory you just created.

    (3) Chmod the randomquotes directory to 777.

    (4) Edit the config.php file to suit your needs using notepad or something similar and save the file back to the server (a full explanation of the variables is given in the file).

    (5) Include randomquotes.php in the page where you want it to appear. To do this use the lines below:

    <?php
    include('http://www.yoursite.com/randomquotes/randomquotes.php');
    ?>

  3. What are the requirements for Random Quotes
Random Quotes only requires that PHP is installed on your web server and you are able to chmod directories.
  4. How do I add quotes to the script
If you want to add more quotes to the script simply find the file called thequotes.txt on your server. Open the file using your FTP browser or download it and open it with notepad or something similar.

Begining either at the end or the start of the file, type in or paste your quotes. Press return and type in <<BREAK>> between each new quote. Save the file back to the server.

Send to a Friend
  1. What is Send to a Friend
This script will allow visitors to your site to send an email to their friends recommending it. It is extremely easy to set-up and use requiring no database or complex configuration and you can have it working in just a few minutes.

You can use it to let people recommend your site or even a single news item - it's up to you. It is also highly configurable, you can change just about everything there is to change including the labels and text used so it will match your site perfectly.

Server Info
  1. What is server info
Server info is a free script that will show your visitors (or you) the last time the server was rebooted and the current load on your server.

You can configure the script to show days, hours, minutes and seconds since the last reboot. You can also configure the script to show only days or turn off the output altogether so it only shows server load.

    <?php
    include('http://www.yoursite.com/showserverinfo/serverinfo.php');
    ?>

  4. What does the server load indicate
The load on the server is measured by the script and presented in terms of a percentage. It is an indication of a number of things at that current moment in time.

What the server load figure portrays is a picture of the health of your server. It takes into account many issues and presents it to you as an overall value. Generally the lower the figure the better.

Some of the things that this figure indicates could be influenced by the numbers of people currently visiting your site, how full your server log files are and how quickly the server can deal with the requests your visitors are making via the scripts and other processing on your web pages.

Every time you add another script to a webpage, the processing time for that page increases and the demands on the server also increase. This does not mean that your site will come to a grinding halt (you would have to add many scripts for that to happen) but it does mean that should a large number of people all visit the same page at the same time, the load on your server could increase dramatically.

If your site does a lot of processing (for instance a Nuke based site or CMS site) you will notice that your server load will be fairly high and, as a consequence, your page load time will also be high compared to a standard HTML page.

There is also another consideration to take into account and that is if your site is running on a shared server. In this scenario it is possible that, even though your site might be written in nothing but HTML and is very fast, other sites on the server may not be so well written and could slow the server down which, in turn, could have a knock on effect on your site.

There is also the server hardware to consider. A server that has limited memory and hard disk space, or that has a poor connection to the net, will usually show a high server load value for obvious reasons.

Using this script will not tell you where the problems are but it will tell you that there is a problem. Probably its' most useful feature is to allow you to gauge over a period of time what is 'normal' for your server and therefore alert you when something is abnormal.

  5. What server load figure should I expect as normal
This is an impossible question to answer because it depends on so many things. As a general rule of thumb though, if you are seeing server load values that are under 4 - 5% you probably have nothing to worry about providing your pages load quickly.

Above that value and it is probably an indication of a problem somewhere. A good check is if you have more than one site, run the script on both/all sites and compare load figures. If the sites share the same server and load values are high for all sites, try setting up a sub domain on that server and adding a single index page plus the script. If the load value is high on this site then there is likely to be a problem with server. If the load value is low then it is probably your sites and you may need to look at streamlining them.

  6. I get a Not found error message
If you get a "Not Found The requested URL was not found on this server" message or something similar then you have probably misnamed the directory the script needs to live in. Check that you have named the directory "showserverinfo"

Strong Arm
  1. What is Strong Arm
Strong Arm is encryption software. It allows you to add a hidden watermark that contains your copyright information (or any other information you choose) in text format and embed that information in your file.

If someone should attempt to steal that file, you can prove ownership by revealing the hidden copyright information using the free Strong Arm viewer.

  2. What platforms does Strong Arm run on
Strong Arm is currently able to run on the following Windows operating systems:

XP Home and XP Professional, 2000, NT, ME & 98

  3. What files can be encrypted with Strong Arm
At present Strong Arm can encrypt a large number of file types. For a full list please visit the main page of the site, find the section near the bottom "Supports a massive list of file types" and click "(details click here)."
  4. What encryption methods does Strong Arm use
It would not be appropriate to disclose the exact encryption used except to say that it uses methods that we have developed in house.

We have taken this path rather than using standard encryption techniques because the wealth of information available on the internet for standard encryption algorithms means anyone wishing to break the encryption has a known starting point. With Strong Arm there is no known starting point and that makes it much harder to crack.

  5. How are my original files affected when I encrypt them
Strong Arm takes your original files, makes a copy and applies the encryption. It then saves this copy of the files rather than overwriting your originals.

The original files are returned to their initial state and are never overwritten.

  6. Should I backup my files before running Strong Arm on them
As with any software that makes changes to files, you should backup your originals.

Strong Arm does not actually "change" anything in your original files but it does "read" them. If there is a power failure or surge when Strong Arm is reading your file, there is a chance that the file could become corrupted.

We would strongly recommend that you make copies of the files you wish to encrypt and pass them through the encryption software. This way your original files will always be safe.

  7. Why can't I encrypt some .exe .mdb or xls files
Some files are written differently to others. Whilst Strong Arm is able to encrypt and protect most files of these types, there are some that it cannot. This is where there is a danger that the encryption could alter the contents of the saved file.

There are no hard and fast rules as to which files it can encrypt and which it can't. The best option is to try it and see but Strong Arm is able to sucessfully encrypt 98% of these file types. Please remember to always work on copies of your files rather than the originals.

  8. How many files can I encrypt at a time
There is no limit to the numbers of files that you can encrypt in one go with Strong Arm. Whilst Strong Arm is quick in operation though, the more files it has to deal with the longer it will take.

In our own benchmark tests Strong Arm is able to encrypt 100 .jpg files of 86Kb each in 4 seconds. When that number is increased to 250 files of 86Kb, the time it takes extends to 14 seconds. Clearly the more files you encrypt in a single operation, the longer it is going to take overall. We would recommend that you encrypt in batches of 150 or less.

  9. What would happen if someone should try to remove my digital signature
The encrypted file created by Strong Arm is saved in such a way that any attempt to remove the encrypted watermarking will usually destroy the data it is protecting.

Those who would want to steal your files and remove your encryption data will probably be faced with hours of tedious work for no reward. This makes it an unworthwhile excercise for potential internet thieves.

  10. Does Strong Arm only protect internet files
No. You can use it to protect any supported file. For instance, if you wanted to share your files with another person in another company but wanted to make sure they could not claim the contents of the files as their own you could protect them with Strong Arm.

If you wanted to license images or music files you have created to other people, you could encrypt the terms of the license into the files. If you yourself have paid a license to use any sort of file, you could encrypt your own details into the files to prevent others using what you have paid for.

In fact you don't even have to encrypt just copyright or license details. You can encrypt a file with any information you want. It could be instructions, a file distribution list, details of the file itself or anything at all! The list goes on and is only limited by your own imagination. The license that comes with the free viewer means that you can freely distribute it with no restrictions. This means everyone can have the ability to read the data encrypted into a file. Simply add the encryption data to your file. Send the file and bundle the viewer with it!

  11. How much data can I encrypt into a file
It depends entirely on you and how much you want to type in. There's no real limit as such but you need to remember that the more you type in the bigger the file will become and the longer it will take to both encrypt and, if you're using the file on a web page, the longer it will take to load.

If required, you could have many pages of data embedded into a file but we would recommend a few lines or paragraph at most unless file size really isn't an issue for you.

  12. By how much does the size of my file increase when encrytped
This depends entirely on how much data you encrypt into the file. As an example the following phrase would add 1Kb to your file:
"This file is copyright 2004 by me"

However there is a minimum overhead added by the encryption and no matter how small the text you add, it will always be a minimum of 1Kb. Just the letter "a" would still add 1Kb.

    A further example phrase:
This file is copyright 2004 by me. I own this file so don't try to steal it. I can prove that I own this file by this copyright information that has been encrypted into it".
That phrase would add a little under 2Kb to your file. Where your file is 200Kb already, it's not going to make much difference - less than 1%, but where your file is very small, say 2Kb, it could double it.

If you are using this file on a web site, again it's not going to make much difference, unless you have many small files in which case it could make your pages load slower. Today though, most people have some form of broadband connection so file sizes aren't as critical as they once were.

  13. I made a mistake when I encrypted a file. Why am I unable to edit the file
We have purposely not included the ability to edit a signature once it has been encrypted into a file. With this function available, anyone could purchase the software and change your encrypted data for their own. They could then claim that they own the file and you would have no way to say differently. In fact, they would even be able to say that they own the file and YOU stole it from them!

We have no plans to change this and we will never release an editor. This would negate the purpose of the software. We recommend that you check what you have typed carefully before encrypting the file. Once it has been encrypted, you cannot change it and will have to delete the file and encrypt it again.

  14. How often are updates to Strong Arm released
We do not have a "roadmap" for regular updates as such. The software performs well and does not require regular updating.

We do understand however that all software comes in for scrutiny from certain types of individual and we are always working on new encryption algorithms. If we become aware that the encryption has been broken or compromised in some way, we will update the encryption methods used and release a critical update.

Additional releases may also take place from time to time that improve the functionality or ability of the software. These updates are based on the feedback we receive from users of the software who may suggest additions or changes to improve it.

All purchasers of Strong Arm are entitled to these updates free of any charge.

Strong Arm Viewer
  1. What is the Strong Arm Viewer
The Strong Arm Viewer is a free program that allows you to view the data encrypted into a file by Strong Arm. It does NOT allow you to make any changes to that data nor does it allow you to encrypt data into a file. It is simply a passive program that can be used to view the digital watermark.
  2. Why is the viewer free
In order to prove ownership of a file you have to be able to reveal the hidden digital signature encrypted within it. Here at Liquid Frog we decided that the easiest and most efficient way to do this was to provide a free viewer.

Anyone who needs to check a file for ownership is not going to want to pay to find out the file he is using has been copyrighted by someone else. By making the viewer free they have no reason not to download it and check the copyright details.

It also increases the functionality of the main software because you are allowed to bundle the viewer and send it with encrypted files if you are sharing information with other parties but wish to retain ownership of a file and its' contents.

  3. Do I need the free viewer if I already own Strong Arm
No. Strong Arm contains its' own viewer. You may however download and use the viewer as a stand alone product if you so wish but the functionality is identical to the viewer included with Strong Arm.
  4. Can I distribute or give away the viewer myself
The terms of the license allow you to distribute the viewer in any way you see fit. You may make the viewer available through any method you deem appropriate. You may attach the viewer to an email, make it available as a download on your site or add it to a file sharing network, it's up to you.

What you may not do is charge a fee for either the viewer or the cost of distribution, nor may you claim that the viewer is yours.

  5. Which platforms does Strong Arm Viewer run on
Strong Arm Viewer will run on either Windows XP Home or XP Professional, NT, 2000, ME or 98

Text Hit Counter
  1. What is PHP Text Hit Counter
PHP Text Hit Counter is a small script written in PHP that will count the number of hits to your website. It will provide a text based output showing this value.
  2. What are the requirements for PHP Text Hit Counter
PHP Text Hit Counter requires PHP to be installed on your server. That's all.
  3. How do I set up PHP Text Hit Counter
Installing the text hit counter is very easy.

    (1) Unzip the distribution file to your local PC

    (2) Open the config.php file and edit the settings:

    (3) Create a directory on your web server called "count" e.g. "http://www.yoursite.com/count"

    (4) Chmod the new directory "count" to 777

    (5) Upload counter.php, codelock.php and config.php to "http://yoursite.com/count"

    (6) Insert an include statement in the pages where you want the counter to show.

Full instructions are included with the scripts readme file.

  4. I get error messages when I use the script
If you receive errors like this:

Warning: fopen(counter.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to create stream: Permission denied in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/counter.php on line 32

Warning: fputs(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/counter.php on line 33

Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/httpd/vhosts/yoursite.com/httpdocs/count/counter.php on line 35

then the script is unable to write the counter.txt file it needs to track the hits.
It's likely that you have chmodded your count directory to 755. Try chmodding to 777.

If you still get error messages create a blank text file using notepad and call it counter.txt. Upload it to your count direcory.

The directory "count" MUST exist in the root of your web server. Changing the name of the directory will prevent the script from working or nesting the directory in another sub directory will have the same effect.

  6. I can't get the script to work on my HTML pages
We charge just $7.99 for removal of the link and you can find instructions on how to do this in the Readme.htm file that comes with the script.
  8. Can I suggest a way to improve this script
Yes of course. We actively encourage users of our software and scripts to suggest improvements so that they can be developed still further. To make a suggestion please use the contact form on the site and send your comments to feedback.

Visitors Online
  1. What is PHP Visitors Online
PHP Visitors Online is a small script written in PHP that will show you how many people are currently visiting your site.

Designed primarily for PHP pages, it is configurable (to a degree) and will allow you to change the appearance of the output and how often the script checks to see if new visitors have come into your site. This is acheived via a config.php file.

Setting up the script is very easy and requires a small handful of changes to one file, uploading the script to the server and running the install routine. Most of the difficult things are already taken care of for you leaving you only to decide where on your page the script should appear.

Full instructions are included with the script

  2. What are the requirements for PHP Visitors Online
You will need PHP and MySQL enabled on your web server. That's all.
  3. How do I set up PHP Visitors Online
Setting up PHP Visitors Online is a very simple process. Essentially, edit the config.php file, upload the files and structure to your web server, chmod one directory and run the included install script from your browser. That's all.

We have tried hard to make installation a painless process for you. Provided you enter the correct parameters, the install script will take care of everything and you only need to add 3 simple lines of code to the page where you want the script to appear.

  4. I get error messages when I use the script
If the error messages you get look something like this:

Warning: main(../online/onlinenow.php) [function.main]: failed to create stream: Operation not permitted
    in /home/httpd/vhosts/yourhost.com/httpdocs/index.php on line 23

Warning: main() [function.main]: Failed opening '../online/onlinenow.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/php4/php')
    in /home/httpd/vhosts/yourhost.com/httpdocs/index.php on line 23

    Then the answer is to change the include path on your pages from "include('../online/onlinenow.php');" to "include('http://www.yoursite.com/online/onlinenow.php');

Another method to get the script working on a HTML page is to use an Iframe like this:

<iframe src=http://yoursite.com/online/onlinenow.php width=100 height=150 frameborder=0 scrolling=no>. You will need to edit the Iframe to suit.

  7. I get errors that say the script cannot connect to my database
If you are receiving MySQL errors relating to being unable to connect to the database, then it is almost certainly the case that you have entered one of the following incorrectly:-

$hostname - This is most often localhost but if the script cannot connect to the database and you are certain that all the other settings are correct you must contact your hosts and ask them the name of your database server. Only they can give you this information if localhost doesn't work for you. It might be that your hostname is an IP address for instance.

$username - If you have set up your database on your host yourself, then this is the user name of the person who is granted access to the database. If your host set it up for you, they will usually have sent you an email containing all the login details. If you have more than one user it is usually best to select the default database admin/user. Some people seem to get confused between this and the name of their database. Be aware that the two are very different.

$password - This is the password of the username in the section above. Again, if you have set up your own database you are usually prompted to enter a username and password to use to gain access to the database. If you use PhpMyAdmin or something like it, when you connect to your database you will be using the same details that are required for this script so you can check your config.php file in PhpMyAdmin to get the values you need.

$database - This is the name of the database on your database server. As an example, if your site were called www.widgets4u.com and your database was set up by your host, your database would probably be called something like widgets4u (this is just an example and will probably not reflect your actual settings). This is very different to the database username and you must not confuse the two.

If you are still having problems connecting to your database, the best answer is to contact your hosts and ask them to provide you with all the info required. They are the only people, other than yourself, who should know these details.
